Porsche 911 Sport Classic Caught Testing Exterior Spyshots - image 1042616

Our spy photographers caught the upcoming Porsche 911 Sport Classic out for a new testing session on the public roads of Germany. As you can see the car is missing most of the camouflage which means the testing sessions are pretty much done, and all that is left is mostly fine tuning.

The prototype follows the design lines of the 911 models, but there will be a few distinctive features. First one is of course that little ducktail at the back – a signature of the Sport Classic models. The 911 Sport Classic will also feature a double bubble roof and the lines of the special hood will match perfectly the lines of the roof.

The only camouflage we can see on this prototype is some tape around the sides of the ducktail spoiler and in the middle of the rear light arrangement.

As for the engine, rumors suggest the 911 Sport Classic will get the same engine as the 911 GTS: a 3.0-liter twin-turbo flat-six that delivers 480 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque.

Rumors suggest Porsche will only build 2,000 units of the 911 Sport Classic.

  • 2023 Kia Sportage Gets Distinctive New Duds, More

KiaKia’s current tagline is “movement that inspires” and while I am not sure if the 2023 Kia Sportage will be inspiring, exactly, it will catch your attention.

The venerable subcompact crossover SUV gets a major makeover that looks distinctive (whether it’s attractive or not is up to you) when set against the sea of anonymity that so often exists in that class. Oh, and it sets the stage for future electrified versions.

As with so many vehicles (and, often, humans), the Sportage is gaining in size as it ages — it’s now 7.1 inches longer, with a 3.4-inch longer wheelbase, and taller and wider by half an inch compared to the previous model. It’s also getting a bit nicer, thanks to features like an optional dual-panoramic setup for the 12.3-inch infotainment screens.

    Kia

Ground clearance is up by 1.5 inches for all-wheel-drive models, which will have a multi-terrain drive-mode system.

The trim walk goes like this: LX, EX, SX, SX-Prestige, X-Line, X-Pro, and X-Pro Prestige. The latter two trims are off-road oriented.

    Kia

This fifth-generation Sportage will be built (with a few exceptions for certain trims) in West Point, Georgia, alongside the Telluride three-row SUV and the K5 sedan.

    Kia

Power will come from a naturally-aspirated 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine making 187 horsepower and mating to an eight-speed automatic transmission. While all-wheel drive is available, front-wheel drive is standard. The AWD system has a center-locking differential that it will use to distribute power between the front and rear wheels.

    Kia

The off-road-oriented X-Line and X-Pro models will get AWD standard, along with 19-inch wheels (X-Line) and unique appearance features. X-Pros will have Bridgestone all-terrain tires, 17-inch wheels, LED fog lamps and available LED headlights, heated windshield, available two-tone roof, and cooled front seats.

    Kia

The usual electronic driver aids and safety nannies will be available, and the list is long — a bit too long for this post. New for this year are a 360-degree surround view with 3D and a blind-spot monitoring camera feed for the gauge cluster.

Other standard or available features include Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, coat hangers and USB ports molded into the front-seat headrests, touchpad climate and audio controls, Harman Kardon audio, Bluetooth, wireless charging, and Kia Connect — which replaces Uvo infotainment and includes in-car wi-fi and smart-speaker integration.

Expect to see the next Kia Sportage on sale in the first quarter of next year.

  • Mercedes AMG SL63

    Drivetrain and Performance

    2022 Mercedes AMG SL63 Exterior Spyshots - image 963818

    2022 Mercedes AMG SL63 Exterior Spyshots - image 963818

AMG boss Tobias Moers mentioned that the new SL is being engineered alongside the next-generation GT model and will be far sportier than previous generations of the SL.

Both models are going to use what is known internally as the Modular Sports Architecture (MSA). This makes the development process for both cars much quicker and cost-efficient. It also means that we can expect a much stiffer chassis, as well as a sportier suspension setup for the 2022 Mercedes AMG SL63. That said, the SL would still retain the GT aspect it has been known for.

A few engine options will be offered. The base one will include the 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline-six unit featured in the AMG GT53. It produces 435 horsepower at 6,100 rpm and 384 pound-feet (520 Nm) at 1,800 – 5,800 rpm. This should be enough for a 0 to 60 mph (97 km/h) sprint in around 4.2 seconds.

    2022 Mercedes AMG SL63 Exterior Spyshots - image 963807

    2022 Mercedes AMG SL63 Exterior Spyshots - image 963807

Of course, the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 makes an appearance too. The first version will offer 522 horsepower at 6,250 rpm and 494 pound-feet (670 Nm) at 1,900 – 5,000 rpm. The sprint to 60 mph is expected to be in around 3.7 seconds.

    As for the AMG SL63, it will offer a beefier version of the 4.0-liter V8, which produces 612 horsepower at 5,750 – 6,500 rpm and 627 pound-feet (850 Nm) at 2,500 – 4,500 rpm.

Although this version of the engine is a direct carry-over from the E63 AMG, it might receive even more power for the 2022 AMG SL63. We can expect a 0 to 60 mph time of around 3.2 seconds.

    2022 Mercedes AMG SL63 Exterior Spyshots - image 963812

    2022 Mercedes AMG SL63 Exterior Spyshots - image 963812

So far nothing is said about an SL65 version, which means we probably won’t get a V-12 version for 2022. Interestingly enough, there have been talks about an SL73 version appearing at some point. It’s expected to use the SL63 powertrain and a 204 horsepower electric motor. The total output will be 831 horsepower and at least 738 pound-feet (1,000 Nm). That said, it is unknown whether it will be called the AMG SL63e or the SL73 moniker will make a return.

Regardless of the engine choice, the SL will most probably utilize the nine-speed “Speedshift” automatic.

    Exterior

    2022 Mercedes AMG SL63 Exterior Spyshots - image 963831

The 2022 AMG SL63 is continuously teasing us with less and less camouflage. It seems the next generation of the two-seater has adopted the new Mercedes design, featuring a narrow more aggressive headlight design, as well as the narrower taillights stretching further towards the center of the car. In typical AMG fashion, we get quad-exhaust tips at the back, which are complemented by air extractors located above them.

After the latest “undressing” of the camouflage, the most notable feature of the 2022 Mercedes AMG SL63 is the fabric folding roof. The car will be offered exclusively as a roadster, and a folding hard-top will not be available. The trunk lid also accommodates what looks to be an integrated rear spoiler.

    Interior

    2021 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Interior - image 932135

    2021 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Interior - image 932135

We also know the interior, which has the big screen in the middle known from the new S-Class. It will also find its way into the SL, only here it will be flanked by round air vents on both sides. That said, we already made a remark about how the center console of the upcoming SL bears a striking resemblance to the Star Wars character Jar Jar Binks. Hopefully, this will not deter buyers from enjoying the otherwise, graceful and highly-finished interior of the 2+2 roadster. The instrument cluster will be digital, as it’s now a standard, at least in the premium segment. That said, it will be mounted in a more classic housing.

The next AMG SL63 will also have small but usable back seats, so it will technically be a 2+2 seater. We last this layout in an SL back on the R129-generation.

    Price

    2022 Mercedes AMG SL63 Exterior Spyshots - image 963814

    2022 Mercedes AMG SL63 Exterior Spyshots - image 963814

Obviously, it’s too early to talk about the cost of a 2022 Mercedes AMG SL63, as prices have not been announced yet. That said, we can get an idea of what we can expect if we look at the current model. Prices for the current AMG SL63 are around $140,000. Given that cars are gradually becoming more expensive, as more and more tech is being integrated into them, we can expect starting prices of around $150,000 for the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 AMG SL63.

    Competition

We can’t really mention Mercedes without BMW, as the two brands have decades worth of rivalry. The M8 convertible will probably be the toughest opponent for the SL63, as they are not only in the same price and performance range but are both German. Its 4.4-liter twin-turbo V-8 is mated to an eight-speed automatic. It produces 600 horsepower or 625 in the M8 Competition, at 6,000 rpm. Peak torque is 553 pound-feet (750 Nm) at 1,800 – 5,600 rpm. This is enough for a 0 to 60 mph (97 km/h) sprint in as little as 3.1 seconds. The starting price for the M8 Convertible is $142,500.

    2021 Jaguar F-Type Coupe(updated) Exterior - image 874478

The F-Type is the spiritual successor to the 1960s E-Type, which automatically makes it a cool car. That and Jaguar is known to be the brand of choice for all movie villains. Although the facelifted model focuses more on the GT aspect of the vehicle, it still packs a punch. In the R version, you get an epic-sounding 5.0-liter supercharged V-8. It produces 575 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 516 pound-feet (700 Nm) at 3,500 – 5,000 rpm. This is enough for a 0 to 60 mph time of 3.5 seconds. Power goes to all four wheels through an eight-speed “quick-shift” automatic. Price is where the F-Type R starts making a lot of sense, compared to its German rivals, as it starts from “just” $105,900.

    Conclusion

    2022 Mercedes AMG SL63 Exterior Spyshots - image 963811

    2022 Mercedes AMG SL63 Exterior Spyshots - image 963811

Until now, the Mercedes SL has been known as a luxurious grand tourer, which can cover long distances in comfort, while you feast your senses on the elements. Those characteristics extended even to the more radical AMG SL63. With the new emphasis on performance, the 2022 AMG SL63 has to appeal not only to the elderly gentlemen with deep pockets like it was until now but also to those who still seek the thrill of the drive. Although a tall order, AMG has proven before that you can have a nice middle ground between comfort and performance.

  • Mercedes-Benz GLC – The C-Class-based Crossover That Could Prove To Be A Worthy All-Rounder

The current X253 generation of the GLC is based on the C-Class. Since we already know a new C-Class is on the way, we can expect the upcoming GLC to share a platform with it. Moreover, the next GLC might even get the same version of the 4Matic all-wheel-drive system as the 2023 Mercedes C-Class All-Terrain.

One of the two GLC prototypes is definitely a hybrid or an EV, as its number plate finishes with the letter “E” – a designation used for hybrid and fully electric prototype vehicles, in Germany.

On the outside, the next GLC seems to have grown up in size, compared to the current model. The shape, however, remains very similar to what we already know from the X253 GLC. We also spot mirrors that are located on the doors instead of the window edges, which is in tune with the latest design trends. As with other Mercedes models, it seems the 2023 GLC will score a thinner headlight and taillight design.

On one of the prototypes there are side steps, but the sign “do not step on” gives away that they are most likely part of the camouflage and will not make it on the production model.

The increase in size could mean that third-row seats could be an option available on the GLC. The current GLB, which is smaller, can already be had as a seven-seater, even though the vehicle is clearly more utilitarian in its design, compared to the bigger GLC. In any case, the ability to spec a seven-seater GLC will definitely make the model more versatile.

The interior is expected to be a complete carry-over from the C-Class, with some minor changes. Of course, the GLC is expected to also feature the full and latest arsenal of passive and active safety, with most of it coming as standard.

In terms of powertrain, the upcoming Mercedes GLC will mirror the C-Class engine options. This includes a variety of gasoline and diesel engines, all of which will be aided by a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, as well as one diesel and one petrol PHEV option. All engines will be turbocharged inline-four units and will work with the nine-speed automatic transmission. Later on, at least two AMG versions are expected to come out, which will most likely be powered by turbocharged inline-four engines. One of the AMG versions could also be an FHEV or PHEV.

The next-generation Mercedes GLC is expected to debut late in 2022, as a 2023 model, with a GLC Coupe following a year later. The GLC has already proven a worthy alternative to the Audi Q5 and BMW X3 and this one looks like it will offer more of everything.

  • Audi Is Befuddled About What a Sports Car Really Is

    A Self-Driving Sports Car?

Audi Is Befuddled About What a Sports Car Really Is - image 1005750

Audi Is Befuddled About What a Sports Car Really Is - image 1005750

With the recent influx of electric cars and a huge push to make them more mainstream, the chatter about autonomous cars has boiled down to a small roar at best. Every now and then a new concept or an Elon Musk tweet pops up to remind us that self-driving cars will eventually happen, but otherwise, the market’s main focus today is on electric mobility. And, here comes Audi with a sports car concept that we assume is electric, but that’s where the twist comes in because it’s also billed as an autonomous car. Or, more specifically, it’s a “sports transformation vehicle” that can transform into an autonomous lounge.

Audi Is Befuddled About What a Sports Car Really Is - image 1005620

Audi Is Befuddled About What a Sports Car Really Is - image 1005620

Is it really possible to have a self-driving sports car? Not driving said car kind of defeats the purpose of having the sports car itself, right? That’s our thinking anyway, and I’m sure most of you will agree. Apparently Audi is a little confused here, but not without proper sentiment at least. The teaser for the Sky Sphere concept comes courtesy of a new video staring Audi’s Senior VP, Henrick Wenders, and the company’s Head of Design, Marc Lichte. Oh, and it also starts a gorgeous 1937 Horch 853A Cabriolet.

What’s the relevance to the 853A? Well, it served as an inspiration of sorts for the Sky Sphere concept. Clearly, this isn’t a direct relation, but more of a spiritual one. In the video, Lichte said,

“The basis for good design are proportions. These proportions are simply awesome – long wheelbase, no overhang, huge bonnet. This car offers kind of the road feeling. All of this is the inspiration for our concept car, the Sky Sphere.”

Audi Is Befuddled About What a Sports Car Really Is - image 1005618

Audi Is Befuddled About What a Sports Car Really Is - image 1005618

We don’t know much else about the Sky Sphere Concept. We assume the interior will be over-the-top luxurious and futuristic. The powertrain will likely be electric and borrowed from the 2022 Audi E-Tron GT. As of now, there is no intent for the Sky Sphere to become a production model, but it does at least raise a little bit of hope that Audi won’t give up on sports cars in a time where SUVs and Crossovers are all the rage. It still raises the question of who thought it was a good idea to blend a sports car with an autonomous lounge. If you have a sports car, you want to drive it right? Not be driven around in something that looks fast. A little confusing? Sure, but at least the concept will definitely look cool.

  • 2021 Ford Bronco Delayed Until Summer 2021

The automotive world’s most anticipated product is now delayed again. No, not the All-New Ford EcoSport. In a communication to dealerships, Ford confirmed that the 2021 Ford Bronco would be delayed until Summer 2021. The rollout change was forced by COVID-19 challenges that some of Ford’s suppliers are facing. In a communication sent to dealers that a tipster provided to TTAC, Ford also provided an update on some Bronco options.

Originally, order banks for the 2021 Ford Bronco were going to open on Monday, December 7. That date has now moved to mid-January. The conversion window, which is the period of time a Ford dealer and the buyer have to place a 2021 Bronco order, has been moved to mid-January through March 19, 2021. Orders must be placed by dealers, and customers will receive a delivery window in May 2021. First customer deliveries will now begin in summer 2021 instead of spring 2021.

Ford has made it clear that this delay is tied to a supplier issue. Coronavirus challenges have had a significant impact on a number of Bronco suppliers. Ford has not named these suppliers. Due to a high number of Bronco reservations, and COVID-19 related delays, Ford anticipates some Bronco reservations will be pushed into the 2022 model year. Previously, Bronco orders placed by September 18, 2020, would be built for the 2021 model year. Ford has not indicated if that date will change, but they have said that reservations will still be fulfilled in approximately the same order received.

    Bronco. Photo: Adam Tonge/TTAC

This delay has also pushed back one of the 2021 Bronco’s most mythical options; the Sasquatch Package and manual transmission configuration, or Mansquatch, will not be available for 2021. If a buyer wants a 2021 Ford Bronco with the Sasquatch Package, it will be automatic-only. The seven-speed manual transmission will still be available on the 2021 Ford Bronco. However, much like Bigfoot, no one will ever see a 2021 Ford Bronco with the Sasquatch Package and manual transmission. That is, unless someone camps outside of Michigan Assembly Plant with a 16mm camera and films a grainy Patterson-Gimlin film style motion picture.

The other piece of Bronco news in today’s communication should please First Edition reservation holders. Ford has added a black interior option to the First Edition Bronco. To many First Edition reservation holder’s dismay, Navy Pier was originally the only interior option for First Edition Broncos. Ford would not confirm that Bronco Navy Pier interiors were Mercury Villager Nautica Edition interiors found in a Detroit area warehouse.

The 2021 Ford Bronco delays are unfortunate for customers, dealers, and Ford Motor Company. Enthusiast customers are growing impatient with the process, and want their vehicles. At the same time, Ford Dealers and Ford Motor Company would like to turn on the money printer that is the Ford Bronco.

The silver lining in the delays is that Ford may once again be focused on making Quality Job One. After the disastrous launch of the Explorer and Aviator, Ford needs to make sure core product launches are not plagued with quality issues. We’ll have to wait until next summer to see if they’ve figured it out.
